What is Kratom?
Learn about the plant leaf that offers clean energy and relaxation.
Southeast Asian Heritage
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical evergreen tree native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea. Interestingly, kratom belongs to the same family of plants as the coffee tree. For centuries, farmers and laborers in these regions chewed the fresh leaves to sustain energy and relieve fatigue during long days of field work.
How Kratom Works
Kratom leaves contain natural active compounds called alkaloids, the most prominent being mitragynine. These alkaloids bind to receptors in the body to produce different effects based on the strain and serving size. In small amounts, kratom acts as a mild stimulant, providing clean, jitter-free energy and focus. In larger amounts, it promotes deep physical comfort and relaxation.
The Vein Strains
The effects of kratom depend on the color of the veins in the leaf, which reflects its maturity and how it was dried:
- White Vein: Harvested early. Popular for clean daytime energy, alertness, and morning motivation.
- Green Vein: Harvested at mid-maturity. Offers a balanced blend of mild energy, mood elevation, and gentle relaxation.
- Red Vein: Harvested at full maturity. Known for soothing relaxation, comforting the body, and easing stress in the evening.
